Vintage Engagement Rings
What is a Vintage Engagement Ring? A vintage engagement ring can include a broad variety of styles. Let's look at the word "vintage" - by definition this word means, "the process of making wine from grapes" or "a contemporary collection from a specified season or year." So how does this apply to jewelry? In particular what is a Vintage Engagement Ring? Retailers are always looking for marketing terms to try and identify a collection or brand their products by giving the item an attractive sounding name. The same goes for jewelry stores and in this case, Vintage Engagement Rings or Vintage Settings is a collection of setting styles. But, what kind of styles are they talking about? When shopping online this can be a bit confusing so it may help to look at the different settings that are considered vintage by retailers.
| We've seen the term coined pretty much for any type of setting that has intricate designs, such as "milgrain" etching along the edge of the ring, like in this picture to the left. If you notice the border has small indents engraved on it, these carvings are call milgrain. This setting also has pave-set side diamonds. |

Which brings us to one of the most popular uses of the term, vintage which basically includes any ring with a "pave" setting. This means that the side diamonds in a ring are set closely together by beads of metal that come out of the body of the setting itself. This is contrary to prong-set, channel-set or bezel set diamonds. Pave settings give the ring a seamless looks where the diamonds appear as if they are almost engraved into the metal. The setting on the left is a good example of the classic pave-set diamond ring.

| Finally, antique looking settings or antique engagement rings have always been synonyms with the term vintage engagement rings. The ring on the left not only has milgrain and pave-set diamonds, but also has an antique look. So in this example we can approach the term vintage in jewelry as referring to styles that come from a different time in history, reminiscent of a 18th or early 19th century. But, especially for the type of style that has fine detail - like the branches of grapes which are intricate and delicate. Suggesting a collection that is higher in quality because of the labor that is required to cast such fine detail and set the pave set diamonds. These types of rings probably make the most accurate use of the term vintage because they are inspired from an era of hand-crafted jewelry with elaborate detailed designs.
